It is said that time heals all wounds but at best it produces a scab to cover them. I think what time really does is fog our memory, smooth the uncomfortable bumps that we receive in life. It has been more than a decade since the events of September 11, 2001. Time has slowly fogged up the glasses of memory for most of the world. For some today will be another day and Osama bin Laden a dead body lying in the sea.
The men and women who were my age in 2001 (21) were children when the attack took place and others will never have known a world where America was not in constant conflict. In the 12 years since 9/11 there have been wars, floods, and economic upheavals. The world moved on because that is what it does and it gets harder to tap into the memories and sensations of that day and the days after.
But that is what many will do today; pause and remember.
And reopen the wound.
